Medtronic has unveiled Touch Surgery Aide, an AI-native computing platform built to bring real-time artificial intelligence into the operating room during robotic procedures. The company gave an early look at the Society of Robotic Surgery's 2026 Annual Meeting in Florida in late July, framing it as a foundational shift in intraoperative support.
The platform runs on NVIDIA's accelerated computing infrastructure, drawing on Holoscan, CUDA, and TensorRT to combine computer vision and multimodal AI for processing surgical video in real time. Medtronic said the architecture is designed to run multiple AI applications during a single live procedure, rather than one narrow function at a time.
The first application, Instrument Exit Point, has already secured FDA clearance for the Hugo RAS system. It gives surgeons a visual alert when a robotic instrument moves beyond the visible field of view. Executives describe this as an early step toward broader real-time AI tools, which the company expects to extend into laparoscopic surgery over time.
Company leadership frames the rollout as evidence of a generational shift, in which surgery moves from technology that assists a surgeon's hand toward systems that help entire teams decide faster. It also adds a new competitive axis to a market where AI-assisted decision support is increasingly seen as what separates one platform from another.
