Hospital IT and clinical leaders want surgical robotics vendors to close a persistent gap. Robotic platforms, surgeon consoles, and hospital record systems still do not talk to each other cleanly enough, and fragmented connectivity is slowing multi platform programs down. Most systems already link to electronic records, imaging databases, and cloud dashboards through standards like HL7 and DICOM. Inconsistent implementation across vendors is the sticking point.
A recent deployment at a major Swedish university hospital shows what is possible. The institution folded seven separate video sources into one unified platform. Search time for old case video dropped from thirty minutes to seconds, and storage needs fell by roughly 80 percent.
Vendors are answering with more modular architecture. Console level connections now typically run over Wi-Fi and Ethernet, built to satisfy HIPAA and IEC 80001-1 rules on encryption and access. Technologists increasingly describe the operating room itself as a connected space, where tissue, instruments, and data systems interact throughout a case.
For hospitals running several robotic platforms at once, this is what decides whether outcomes and performance data can be compared across systems at all. Health leaders now argue that unifying that data, not the hardware, is becoming the deciding factor as robotics programs scale.
